Thu 14 Feb - Alamogordo, NM

On the road again. Not a long trip today, just "down the road" to Alamogordo, via Carrizozo and a place called Three Rivers.

Along the way, we stopped at a small cemetery in Lincoln. Mostly Spanish sounding names on the graves and many were very simple, including piles of rocks and wooden crosses. Looked a bit like graveyards in old western movies.

In Carrizozo, we stopped for a coffee in an old style diner, sitting on bar stools. The lady behind the counter was one of those good natured, chatty, slightly big shall we say ladies who called everybody "dahling" or "luv". Good fun.
We were taking the scenic route to Alomogordo rather than road 70 which would have been much faster, as we wanted to check out the place below, Three Rivers Petroglyph site.
Below is their visitor centre and you walk up on a ridge with great view of the surroundings. The hike is not long, some 1+ mile return and well worth it.
According to the spiel, Three Rivers Petroglyphs are outstanding examples of prehistoric Jornada Mogollon rock art and there are some 21,000 petroglyphs, including masks, sunbursts, wildlife, hand print and geometric designs here. It looks like Di has found something here...
And what has Hans found here...?
Two faces have I...
Or was that, two hands...?
Self portrait, with Sierra Blanca in the background.
We have a picnic lunch at the Three Rivers Visitors Centre, before we move on to Alamogordo and check in at Suburbian Extended Stay motel.
Our room is small, clearly suitable and perfect for a single person staying there for a while as it has cooking facilities, but one chair only. However, when Hans walks down to ask for a 2nd chair, the lady receptionist promptly upgrades us to a larger room, with 2 chairs. We are very pleased as we didn't pay very much for the room.
After getting organised, we made a quick visit to Alamogordo Visitor Centre to get some information about the area (don't bother, the 2 people working there were old, the bloke was half deaf, and had no clue about hikes).
We then decided to drive to White Sands National Monument or Park, the main reason why we stopped in Alamogordo as it is the nearest town of any size to it.
Coming from Australia, as you drive though the park, you can't help feeling that there should be a beach and water behind each of these sand dunes. Very interesting place though. Here are some shots..
Di was trying out sledding using a piece of cardboard, but that didn't work very well.

On the way back, we stopped at Walmart to shop some groceries. Now that we have a kitchen of sorts for the next 2 nights, we might as well take advantage of it for some home cooking.
A nice pasta with Italian sausages and a glass of Cab Sav went down well. Good as gold. Good night.
